I like brevity, but am a bit shocked by the briefness of the article on hypertension. I happen to be preparing a "consumer guide" video which addresses this complex and vital subject. Here are my major points:
1) Many writers and practitioners fail to make clear to the consumer what the heck they are talking about re "hypertension." Most but not all hypertension is caused by cholesterol-clogged arteries, and consequently, most treatments focus on "reducing cholesterol." This is always a good idea but not always the key to the problem.
2) If not cholesterol, hypertension can be caused or aggravated by anything from a sub-clinical glandular condition to an habitual emotional response to stress, or general poor health. No one really knows. This is a matter for enquiry and experimentation on a very case-by-case.
3) The advantage of a "natural" approach to hypertension is that "you can treat something without really knowing what you are treating." That is to say: whereas it may be very foolish to "just blindly try one drug after another"--it is on the contrary quite safe and often the most cost-effective approach to "just blindly try one 'natural alternative' after the other." (Within common sense and under medical observation.)
4) DO NOT STOP TAKING PRESCRIBED MEDICATION. This is a risky and UNNECESSARY step often resorted to by people seeking "natural alternatives." Instead, try natural alternatives along with your doctor's medication and definately in conjunction with regular testing. If and when the testing demonstrates that "the alternative is working," then the doctor may at his discression gradually decrease your medication. If you don't like your doctor's attitude, get another doctor--but don't go without.
5) If "cholesterol" is the problem, this is almost as simple a matter as clearing out a clogged kitchen drain. A failure to eliminate excessive cholesterol can only be blamed on a failure to fully utilize the huge variety of totally safe and natural tools that are available for this procedure. Unfortunately, such failure is the rule rather than the exception. People do not seem to understand that, just as you cannot hope to clear a clogged drain by stirring the water with a fork, so also to clear clogged arteries, you must stop eating such grease as you would never pour down a drain, and start eating a stiff dose of "nature's drainos." This includes such measures as: a) Grape fasting. If you can tolerate sweets, once a week, eat nothing but green grapes (preferably organic) for half a day or, preferably, the entire day. Ask at your health food store for the several books on this subject. b) Fresh pinneapple/bromelain/serrapeptase. These provide powerful digestive enzymes which can literally "eat" the cholesterol. But of course, you cannot just "eat pinneapple once in a while." You must strive to thoroughly saturate your tissues. Note: fresh pinneapple juice needs to be from high quality, sweet pinneapple, or it can be quite harsh. Second-rate pineapple can be mixed with starfruit, orange, guava, apple, and other juices to make it more gentle. Bromelain is the active ingredient in pinneapple which is available as a supplement. Papaya, a general enzyme supplement, and a basic multivitamin are also a good idea. c) chelation therapy/oral chelation/magnesium glycinate. Intravenous "chelation therapy" is very powerful and to be used with caution. "Oral chelation" materials, chiefly magnesium glycinate, are slower but safer. d) Twinlab PC-55. This is the most potent form of "lecithin" available. "Lecithin" helps to "mix oil with water"--i.e., "emulsify" fatty materials. This is one of the oldest and most popular methods of cholesterol control, endorsed by several doctors and scientists, but surprisingly forgotten of late. e) Raw Tienci. A potent but gentle herb available in Chinese pharmacies for "dilating the coronary artery and increasing blood flow." You can feel it working. f) "Cholesteril" by Enzymatic Therapy. The latest, high-tech form of vitamin B-5, a potent "triglyceride transporter." g) Garlic/cayenne/ginger tea. Either alone or together, these herbs have obvious value in breaking up deposits and increasing circulation. h) Niacin. Niacin is important and is surprisingly emphasized by many doctors--but niacin is by no means "better" than anything else on this list. Niacin is furthermore limited in its action and needs to be used with caution. High doses or "time release" will cause liver damage. Therefore I fail to understand why niacin seems to be the exclusive "natural alternative" of many practitioners. My opinion: do take small doses--do not rely exclusively--do prefer "chromiacin." "Chromiacin" is a patented product which achieves the "niacin flush" using a very small dose. Paradoxically, however, lack of popular damand has reduced product availability to the "flush free" form! i) Flax oil/cottage cheese (Budinger program). Ask at your local health food store for books on flax oil. j) "Colon Green" by Futurebiotics. After decades of trial-and-error, I have found this very modest and simple capsule to be absoletely the best, most gentle, and most complete formula available for dietary fiber and general digestive health that is a key to all health. My only caveat is DO NOT FOLLOW THE LABEL DIRECTIONS, which advise "6 capsules with a large glass of water." Instead, just take 1 or 2 capsules with each meal, right along with your vitamins. Whereas the label is designed for people seeking instant and temporary relief from constipation, I am on the contrary suggesting a long-term regimen to gradually maximize the efficiency of digestion and elimination. Make no mistake, however: constipation, however slight, hidden, or sub-clinical, is a certain cause for hypertension! k) "Good calcium." Blood levels of calcium are specific. Excess calcium will suppress heart function. Therefore it is an often-overlooked matter that one should not just "take calcium," but take good quality calcium, and generally in the evening, with a healthy dose of magnesium during the day. "Calcium orotate" is probably the most appropriate for hypertension. Colloidal calcium, plus a full range of colloidal minerals, as in the product "Optimin Plus," is also important. By all means avoid calcium carbonate, oyster shell, or "bone meal" (steamed).
6) Herbal tonics. If "cholesterol reduction" is clearly not the whole answer to your hypertension, then I would suggest serious, step-by-step experimentation with popular herbal remedies. There are 3 major categories of such remedies. Herbs are not my strong point so I don't have these on the top of my head--write me if interested, or enquire at your health food store. General procedure: (a) to repeat myself, do not go "cold turkey" on prescribed medication, or in any way fail to follow your doctor's advice. (b) Do meanwhile try herbal remedies in gradually increasing doses, one-at-a-time, for several months. Please note that it is of first importance to first establish WHAT IS YOUR TOLERANCE for the herbal remedy. Do not start out expecting to be "cured," or you are almost certain to give up too easily. The goal is firstly, to establish what herb formulas you can take and how much, and secondly, to take all that you can take and keep taking it. If you have serious hypertension, I shouldn't have to tell you how dangerous it is or how dangerous the medication also is. THEREFORE it is in my opinion foolish to "give up" without trying optimum levels of gentle, herbal formulas for several years or more.
6) Rejuvenation therapy, i.e., "make everything better." The three major categories are: a) Growth hormones. I do not advise expensive and risky injections of growth hormones. However, quite safe oral supplements which naturally increase your ability to produce growth hormones are now available. I do not have this information handy. Write me if interested. b) Pro-hormones: DHEA, Pregnenolone, Yam Cream, Melatonin. Each one of these products has been said to "reduce hypertension." This is a complex subject. Do be cautious, do prefer sublinguals and creams rather than pills, do read up and do use "test kits." c) Glandular therapy. Glandular therapy is the use of glandular bovine or porcine extracts to provide the glands with an abundance of their essential materials. This produces quite noticeable results in overall health. The most "proven" delivery method is via "live cell injection." This costs several thousand dollars per year and is available at American Biologics Clinic, Mexico, tel. 800-227-4458. Oral versions are available, though certainly less effective and slower, and it is important to use the best. I am in the process of compiling a list of the 14 best oral glandular products: primarily capsules by Enzymatic Therapy and Nutricology, plus 2 sublingual products. By taking these on a rotion schedule, every major gland can eventually receive maximum nutritional support.
7) Magnets. The use of magnets can theoretically improve circulation and general wellbeing. A problem is that the vast majority of "magnetic" health products were designed only to sell, not to work. One company does produce a serious "under-the-matteress" magnet system. For a free video call Dr. Dean Bonlie, 800-265-1119. (Just don't expect something cheap and flimsy--this costs hundreds of dollars and weighs a ton! But people say it does help.)
8) "Biograms." "Biograms" are a series of sort of "self-hypnosis" tapes which systematically cover every area of common dysfunction with which research has established that the mind has some connection. This is based on solid research and has been tested by several major hospitals. If you have any serious problem whose ramifications extend into the grey area between the physical and the emotional (and that probably means any serious problem) "Biograms" are in my opinion your best bet. About a hundred times cheaper and probably much more reliable than seeing either a psychiatrist or a "faith healer." Just don't expect it to work overnight--like herbal remedies, you have to be prepared to "pop in that cassette" as you go to bed every night for at least a year. This will not only treat your hypertension but everything down to an inferiority complex as well! I don't have the number handy but the company is "Gateways" and is probably on the Internet.
